Back by popular demand! Make your own interpretation of a vintage-style shopping basket in willow, with border detail depending on your level of skill. Beginners are welcome and will make a conveniently sized round basket with a carrying handle and simple border. If you are an improver you might choose to make a larger, oblong or oval basket. If proficient, you will experiment with more complex techniques. Shopping baskets with decorative details such as enamelled split cane strips, plaited bands, twisted cord, and roped or plaited borders, were popular in the 1950’and 60’s.  No one left home to go shopping without one, including men.
Hilary is an experienced tutor and is happy to discuss your requirements in advance so that she can bring suitable materials. We will use willows from Hilary's collection, and incorporate other natural materials and bark for decorative interest.

    £195 (plus materials approximately £20)

The major part of the collection was prepared immediately after the Second World War for a travelling exhibition which was sent to Australia and New Zealand. They date from 1945-1954.

Hand craft one, two or even three beautiful shaker boxes in Cherry and Maple using Shaker materials and methods. A relaxed and gentle process using veneers, the copper tacks that hold the bands and the wooden pegs that pin the bands to the lids and bases are imported from America. Each stage and process closely follows the traditions. The Shaker lifestyle required a practical flexible storage system for household and workshop use. They adapted an English design of box which was almost round, and changed the proportions to the now classic oval design. The distinctive swallow tails of the joint were designed for practical purposes and with the bevelled detail give a stylish hallmark to the finished box.

LIVE ONLINE COURSE COMMENCES - Tuesday Evenings (6pm-7pm) 17th November 2020 FOR THREE WEEKS - see below for session times/dates

We will learn how to make beautifully on centre, sensuously pulled decorative ornaments and light catchers for the home over the Christmas period.
The class allows one to work in a creative way with colour on clear borosilicate. Students will learn how to encase clear rod and twist and shape in the flame to create an icicle with a loop to hang from. Loop exercises are set and once both design and loops are mastered we delve into the use of stripes twisted on the outside of the icicle leading to the making of a variety of different types of ‘filigrana’ cane in the Italian style. We will look at a number of design types with colour. The most important technique you will learn in this workshop is how to use heat to control (to your best advantage) and pull your glass uniformly. By the end of the workshop participants will have many beautiful creations for their home or as gifts for their nearest and dearest.
There will be three 1 hour live zoom sessions and two ‘one on one’ 15 minute personal consultations to help you through the tricky bits.

LIVE ONLINE COURSE COMMENCES 27th MAY 2020 FOR SIX WEEKS - see below for session times/dates

This class is designed by glass master Dr Julie Anne Denton, to gently introduce the sculptural beginner to quirky off mandrel forms in soft glass from the comfort of your own studio. During these six zoom sessions, and five ‘one on one’ e-tutorials we will learn how to make penguins, elephants, owls and flamingos. These forms will teach the student a variety of techniques including how to ‘gather’, how to work with scissors and scaled up ‘mashers’, how to make use of the ‘glass tripod’ to create a stand for your animal and when to use ‘hot’ and ‘cold’ punties during the making process whilst ‘auto-annealing’ your soft glass sculptures. By the end of this six week class you will feel comfortable and confident making your own original small scale sculptures in soft glass without the cracks. Tracey Bell from ‘The Old Kennels’ in Devon UK, said this about Julie's teaching technique "JULIE ANNE DENTON has taught two to four day classes at The Old Kennels on a regular basis since early 2007. Her ability and affinity with glass is self-evident in her work, and she has a natural talent for conveying information clearly and concisely to others. Her teaching style is relaxed and her manner calm, even with the most demanding of pupils, making her a popular tutor. I cannot fault Julie’s reliability, timekeeping, communications, lesson planning or preparation of class literature. Julie has taught all levels of students on courses at The Old Kennels, often with mixed and varied abilities within the same class. She always ensures that students work to their ability and are satisfied therefore with their results, and has a knack of balancing this with considered challenges and inspirational ideas to widen the student’s repertoire and tailors these well to the individual. She is careful to give plenty of individual attention when teaching and is sensitive to characters and dynamics within a group, as well as being vigilant to be present for students at critical moments and offering sincere praise where it is due. This level of individual support is vital to students’ self-confidence as well as their consideration of ‘value for money’ and ultimately their return to future courses." Skill Level: Your own flameworking torch, or access to a flameworking studio is a necessity. This course is suitable for beginners and improvers.

LIVE ONLINE COURSE COMMENCES Saturday 17th October 2020 FOR FIVE WEEKS - see below for session times/dates

This course follows a live project commissioned by National Heritage to recreate the focal beads from the 1500 year old Pagan Lady Viking necklace. It is counted among the ten wonders of the Viking world and it was found on the Isle of Man. 1000 years ago a Viking of great standing inherited an heirloom which had been passed down through the family line for 500 years. The beads were purchased over half a Millennium through trade during ‘Viking’ journeys across Europe. When ‘The Pagan Lady’ died, this precious necklace was buried with her. Archaeologists discovered her remains in the Isle of Man, and Julie Anne Denton was commissioned by Manx National Heritage to study and recreate this 52 bead necklace. It consists of 6 amber beads, 44 glass, one jet and one faience. After completion, a series of talks and practical demonstrations commenced throughout the Heritage sites on the Island. Julie would like to share the techniques developed from this exciting project to the wider glass Community. The class begins with a lecture about the Pagan Lady, the History surrounding her story and how the beads where originally created. A full set of working notes with detailed pictures is given to each student. Over the course of this online workshop, Julie will show you how to age beads, make 1500 year old murini, mix your own colours, use glass enamels and powders, mimic aged amber and work to exact specifications within a strict brief. No matter what your skill level, by the end of this class you will leave with your own Pagan Lady necklace, encompassing replicas of the focal beads. There will be five 1 hour live zoom sessions on Saturdays, and three ‘one on one’ 15 minute personal consultations Skill Level: Your own flameworking torch, or access to a flameworking studio is a necessity. This course is suitable for beginners and improvers.
