LINDA HAMPSON

ARTIST SPECIALISING IN BOTANICAL & NATURAL HISTORY

STRELITZIA REGINAE
by Linda Hampson

Linda works primarily in the medium of oil based coloured pencil. She has no formal training but has worked hard at developing her natural ability.

She enjoys producing art work of birds, botanicals and wildlife. Her art hangs in many private collections around the world. She has botanical work hanging at SANBI’s (South African National Biodiversity Institute) Head Office in Pretoria and at the Visitors Centre of Durban’s Botanic Gardens.

Linda exhibited at the prestigious Kirstenbosch Biennale Exhibition of Botanical Art, South Africa, since 2002 and was awarded  medals at each exhibition. In 2011 she moved to England and by 2012, she was offered Associate membership of the SBA( Society of Botanical Artists), England.  In 2013, due to the quality of her work, she was elected to full membership of the SBA.  At the 2013  London exhibition, she received the ‘Derwent Award’ for ‘outstanding work in the coloured pencil medium’.

In 2010, she had art accepted for the Focus on Nature (FON) Exhibition at the New York State Museum. This work received a Jury Award. She had work accepted again, for the FON Exhibition 2014 and this work is to remain in the permanent collection of the New York State Museum. Yet another work was accepted for the FON 2019 – 2020 exhibition being held at the Roberson Science Museum and it was a great honour when this was bought for the retiring curator.

Linda is also regularly commissioned to do portraits of pets and horses. More recently, she is exploring the ancient medium of metal point.

In South Africa, Linda was a popular tutor for the medium of coloured pencil and travelled countrywide giving workshops, as well as regular lessons. Now that she is living in England, this is something she is continuing to do.
