Back by popular demand! Make your own interpretation of a vintage-style shopping basket in willow, with border detail depending on your level of skill. Beginners are welcome and will make a conveniently sized round basket with a carrying handle and simple border. If you are an improver you might choose to make a larger, oblong or oval basket. If proficient, you will experiment with more complex techniques. Shopping baskets with decorative details such as enamelled split cane strips, plaited bands, twisted cord, and roped or plaited borders, were popular in the 1950’and 60’s.  No one left home to go shopping without one, including men.
Hilary is an experienced tutor and is happy to discuss your requirements in advance so that she can bring suitable materials. We will use willows from Hilary's collection, and incorporate other natural materials and bark for decorative interest.

    £195 (plus materials approximately £20)

Photo credits: black and white images from a set of photos of baskets in the British Council collection at the Museum of English Rural Life. The major part of the collection was prepared immediately after the Second World War for a travelling exhibition which was sent to Australia and New Zealand. They date from 1945-1954.

Hand craft one, two or even three beautiful shaker boxes in Cherry and Maple using Shaker materials and methods. A relaxed and gentle process using veneers, the copper tacks that hold the bands and the wooden pegs that pin the bands to the lids and bases are imported from America. Each stage and process closely follows the traditions. The Shaker lifestyle required a practical flexible storage system for household and workshop use. They adapted an English design of box which was almost round, and changed the proportions to the now classic oval design. The distinctive swallow tails of the joint were designed for practical purposes and with the bevelled detail give a stylish hallmark to the finished box.

£195 (plus materials dependant on size and number of boxes made - approx £10 per small box)
