On this course you’ll learn how to construct a frame basket – using frames pre-made and steam-bent by the tutor. Later, on the course, is the chance to try forming these yourself. Willow, in different bark colours from Hilary’s collection of varieties, will be used for the frames, ribs and weaving the body of the basket. A knife is used for shaping the ribs.

Frame basketry is an ancient basketmaking technique, used by itinerant travellers and rural agricultural workers, it is not generally found in the workshop production of baskets. With hoop frame, for rim and optional handle, ribs forming the body of the basket, woven over with rods that may be whole or split, the forms are more complex than appears at first glance.

Once you have gained an understanding of how to put the structure together the permutations: shallow, deep, round, oval, melon, boat-shape, split and shaved ribs are all possible.

Hilary is an experienced tutor and is happy to discuss your requirements in advance. Beginners and more experienced basketmakers are welcome.

Hand craft one, two or even three beautiful shaker boxes in Cherry and Maple using Shaker materials and methods. A relaxed and gentle process using veneers, the copper tacks that hold the bands and the wooden pegs that pin the bands to the lids and bases are imported from America. Each stage and process closely follows the traditions. The Shaker lifestyle required a practical flexible storage system for household and workshop use. They adapted an English design of box which was almost round, and changed the proportions to the now classic oval design. The distinctive swallow tails of the joint were designed for practical purposes and with the bevelled detail give a stylish hallmark to the finished box.

£195 (plus materials dependant on size and number of boxes made - approx £10 per small box)

Create maps using the Middle Ages as our inspiration. Maps in those days were not so much geographical but as a means of showing a particular journey, for example how to get from A to B. For our maps I would like you to think of a memorable journey; this could be from your house to the nearest town, or something more adventurous, such as a trip to the far reaches of this island of Britain. We do not have to be literal or exact. Important things are made big and less important things become smaller. Our map may not be immediately recognisable, but it will be completely understandable.

Jim is well known for his beautiful cartography, art and design work in the film industry.
