On this course you’ll learn how to construct a frame basket – using frames pre-made and steam-bent by the tutor. Later, on the course, is the chance to try forming these yourself. Willow, in different bark colours from Hilary’s collection of varieties, will be used for the frames, ribs and weaving the body of the basket. A knife is used for shaping the ribs.
Frame basketry is an ancient basketmaking technique, used by itinerant travellers and rural agricultural workers, it is not generally found in the workshop production of baskets. With hoop frame, for rim and optional handle, ribs forming the body of the basket, woven over with rods that may be whole or split, the forms are more complex than appears at first glance.
Once you have gained an understanding of how to put the structure together the permutations: shallow, deep, round, oval, melon, boat-shape, split and shaved ribs are all possible.
Hilary is an experienced tutor and is happy to discuss your requirements in advance. Beginners and more experienced basketmakers are welcome.
